BRIEF HISTORY OF NLP

Neuro Linguistic Programming

NLP early days

Neuro Linguistics programming is the study of human performance. NLP is based on modelling excellence and creating transformation at a deeper and permanent level. It was developed in the 1970s at the University of California Santa Cruze by two driven and curious men, John Grinder (linguistics professor) and Richard Bandler (student).

Richard Bandler and John Grinder were determined to understand how successful therapists help their clients improve their lives effectively and permanently. With their combined knowledge of linguistics and behavioural science, they both started to study impressive therapists such as Virginia Satir (family therapist). Fritz Perls (gestalt psychotherapist), Milton Erickson (Conversational Hypnotherapist for healing), Gregory Bateson (Gestalt therapy) & Fritz Perls (Gestalt Therapy).

Key Questions:

Together they sought out the answers to these key  questions:

  • Why are they so effective?
  • How do they get results?
  • What is the common pattern?
  • How are they breaking down language?
  • What are they NOT doing?

With all the knowledge and techniques they had acquired, they wrote the famous book “The Structure of Magic”. With this book, NLP was born.

With fires in their belly and driven minds, they wanted to take this inspiring knowledge to the next level. They sought out people who had excelled at what they were doing; such as the best communicators, exceptional leaders, and phenomenal researchers to answers to the same key questions.

Knowing the patterns of how people think & behave meant they could easily solve problems and famously get results.

Unfortunately in 1980, Richard Bandler and John Grinder broke up their partnership, each to pursue his own vision of NLP.

Below is an experience of Richard Bandlers’ Masterful work. I personally love listening to Richard and connecting with his mischievous humour. I adore Richard so much that I named my dog after him (this may have been a mistake as Richie has a level of genius yet is so naughty; just like Richard). – Enjoy!

Richard Bandler - History of NLP

In 2015 I started work on a film about Richard Bandler. It’s called “Altered States, The Richard Bandler Story” and includes interviews with people who have crossed paths with Richard differently. While it took years to complete, there are answers to many of the questions about Richard and NLP and will have you experience a range of emotions that signify how many lives Richard has touched over his 50+ years in building the best human change technology that is still embodied by many to this day. Enjoy, John La Valle
