For Coaches, Counsellors & Helping Professionals
A Different Way to Start the Conversation.
Sometimes a client sits across from you knowing something isn’t right, yet they’re too overwhelmed, shut down or caught up in their thoughts to explain it.
In those moments, an open-ended “How are you feeling?” can leave them struggling to find an answer.
What’s Your Problem Like? takes some of the pressure off finding the right words. Spreading the cards on the table gives clients something concrete to look at, point to and choose, creating a natural starting point for a deeper conversation.
Give Clients a Visual Way to Explore Their Position
The illustrations draw on the symbolic language of the unconscious mind, using familiar physical experiences and metaphors to represent how people experience difficult situations.
A client might describe feeling trapped, weighed down, pushed around or as though they’re going in circles.
“I’m right here, at the bottom of this pit.”
Now you have something concrete to explore together.
Help clients distinguish between who they are and the position they find themselves in. This creates opportunities to recognise recurring patterns, explore unmet needs and consider different perspectives without making the situation their identity.
Bring Structure to the Conversation
Every card includes three grounded In Real Life questions and a Change Your Position prompt, providing a structure for exploring what’s happening, what matters and what might be different.
Start with the illustration
Invite your client to choose the image or position that best represents their experience.
Explore with questions
Use the three In Real Life questions to investigate what’s happening, what might be influencing the situation and which of the eight human needs may be important.
Consider another position
Use the Change Your Position prompt to introduce alternative perspectives and involve your client in identifying what might work for them.
You have a visual starting point, questions to guide the exploration and a practical way to bring the conversation towards a possible next step.
Simple for Clients, Flexible for Practitioners
Clients need no specialist knowledge to begin using the cards.
The colour-coded Fight, Flight, Freeze and Fawn groupings provide an additional framework for recognising different responses under pressure.
The symbolic language and eight human needs offer further layers of exploration for practitioners with relevant training.
Use the illustrations as straightforward conversation starters, follow the questions to guide your exploration or incorporate the deeper frameworks into your existing coaching, counselling or therapeutic approach.
The cards can be as simple or detailed as your professional knowledge and the needs of your client allow.
