When the Healing Journey Goes Dark
Many people go through dark chapters in life. Trauma, divorce, unforeseen circumstances, accidents, sudden death, or events that feel like a shock to the whole system can place a person on a journey they never expected to take. Sometimes it can feel like life stopped in that moment, with the painful thought, “This should not have happened to me.”
When something deeply painful happens, it can feel as though life has placed a dark shadow over us. We may want to hide, escape, avoid, shut down, or wait for someone to rescue us from the heaviness. The injustice and pain can feel confusing. The mind may struggle to make sense of what happened, while the heart is still trying to recover from how hurt it feels.
Interestingly, darkness can also show up in the healing journey itself. When it does, I take notice. In the modality I work with, darkness can suggest that a significant issue is still left unhealed, almost as if the mind has placed it on hold while life continues around it. It may be acting as a protective shield, keeping uncertainty, fear, and pain at a distance until the person feels safe enough to understand what is there.
This is why it is important to gently shine light into those dark chapters, not to force someone to relive pain, but to begin noticing what the mind has protected. When the mind blacks out trauma, it may also black out the resources attached to it: the learning, the strength, the wisdom, and the empowered parts of self that were meant to help the person find their way through. Cutting out reality may protect us for a while, but over time it can make life feel heavy, dim, and disconnected.
Understanding darkness as a protective shield can take some of the fear out of it. It helps us see that darkness is not emptiness or failure. It is often the mind’s way of saying, “There is something here that still needs care.” When we understand where the darkness sits around a person, we can begin to understand what area of life may feel blocked, burdened, or too painful to face alone.
Why It Can Feel Easier to Stay in the Dark
Sometimes it feels easier to stay dim, numb, or shut down. A person may sense that others in their life will not understand the depth or complexity of what they are experiencing. They may believe it is too hard to explain, because even when someone means well, feeling misunderstood can create more confusion and pain. So the mind chooses silence. It says, “Don’t think about it. Don’t go there. Shut it down.”
The Hidden Cost of Avoidance
In healing journeys, people often meet dark chapters. They may want to hide in the dark and avoid the real world, not because they are weak, but because part of the mind is trying to protect them from information that once felt too painful to approach.
In hypnotherapy and other therapeutic modalities, darkness can be meaningful. It may represent a place where the mind is saying, “Don’t go there; it hurt too much.” But when painful material is completely cut off, the resources attached to it may also become harder to access: wisdom, memory, identity, resilience, choice, and the parts of self that know how to move forward.
The work is not to force the darkness open. It is to notice it with respect, curiosity, and safety. Darkness often marks a threshold. On one side is the pain that was too much to process at the time. On the other side may be the missing resources the person needs now.
What Darkness Can Represent
When darkness appears in front, a person may find it difficult to look forward. The future can feel blank, as though there is no clear path, no progression, and no desire to imagine what comes next. This may feel like heaviness, hopelessness, or a deep reluctance to consider the next step. Sometimes the thing right in front of us is the very thing the mind does not yet feel safe enough to see.
When darkness appears behind, a person may be protecting themselves from where they have come from. This can relate to history, heritage, family patterns, past experiences, or chapters they would rather not revisit. They may be working hard to recover, move forward, and get away from the past. Yet the past can still hold important information. What has been survived may also contain strengths, lessons, identity, and resources that have been blacked out along with the pain.
When darkness appears to the left, it may relate to options, alternatives, and what is still available to explore. Darkness here can carry the belief that “there is nothing left.” A person may not be thinking about what they have discarded, walked away from, or decided was no longer possible. This may include forgotten promises, abandoned dreams, responsibilities to others, or pathways they once cared about but can no longer bear to look at.
When darkness appears to the right, it may point to rules, correctness, values, responsibility, or what is right for the person and for others. Darkness here can show a struggle to think about suitable choices. A person may keep moving forward without asking whether the direction is truly right for them. They may feel disconnected from their own inner compass, unsure how to choose in a way that honours both themselves and the people around them.
A Gentle Way Forward
When the healing journey goes dark, it does not mean the person has failed. It may mean they have reached a protected place inside themselves. With the right support, pace, and safety, that darkness can become a doorway rather than a wall.
Healing is not always about rushing toward the light. Sometimes it is about learning to sit gently at the edge of what has been hidden, until the mind feels safe enough to reveal what was once too painful to hold alone. If you notice darkness around a part of your life, it may be worth exploring gently, safely, and with the right support.
